Will the government let immigrants die?

We know it: the life trajectories of undocumented individuals are marked by violence. Violence against those who have been living here for 5, 10, sometimes 20 years, to whom the state denies access to the most basic rights. Violence of exploitation in many sectors of the economy. Violence of the anxiety about tomorrows without any prospect. Violence of deceptive and stigmatizing discourses towards them, portraying them as criminals, or even as blackmailers. Violence towards children born here but deprived of any rights…

In the past decade, authorities have multiplied reforms restricting the possibilities of legal residence access in Belgium. Consequently, they have generated and massified the situation of legal limbo in which tens of thousands of people, rendered “undocumented,” find themselves trapped. Through a cynical electoral calculation, their lives are weighed against the political consequences of a decision that could lead out of this deadlock. By the same calculation, the government chooses to invest 20 million euros in return policy, rather than tackling the crucial question: sheltering these individuals from the virus, as it does for the rest of the population.

The global pandemic continues to wreak havoc, leading to the closure of numerous borders. Broadening access to healthcare for the largest number is an urgent need. The petition “We are Belgium too,” launched by the Coordination of Undocumented People and Undocumented People TV, has surpassed 25,000 signatures. Academic staff at ULB and VUB have publicly endorsed regularization… Undocumented individuals demand the objectification of residence permit issuance through the adoption of clear, permanently enshrined criteria in the law, and their implementation by an independent commission. This is neither excessive nor insurmountable.

And? Nothing. The state remains silent. Its Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, meanwhile, works to ensure these individuals have a future in their countries of origin. Cynicism, we say…

Faced with the harshness of their living conditions and the lack of perspective, faced with the violence of legal limbo, some undocumented individuals have decided to put their lives at stake… Since May 23rd, several hundred of them have started a hunger strike in the occupations led by the Union of Undocumented People for regularization.

History has shown: their struggle will not stop. Campaigns, actions, and mobilizations of recent months will, on the contrary, continue and intensify. Until the government has the political courage to assume a change of course towards them, the determination and commitment of undocumented individuals will increase. And they will take serious risks for their lives.

We – associative actors, trade unionists, citizens, activists – will continue to support their demands for regularization of their stay based on clear criteria, permanently enshrined in legislation and analyzed by an independent commission.

 

Will the government finally take the just, necessary, and simply vital measures that we have been requesting for so many years? Or will it continue to signify through its contempt that some lives are worth less than others?
