Vélingara project
In Vélingara, Senegal, GAMS Belgium has been supporting a program to abandon female genital mutilation (FGM) since 2002.
Today, some families have decided to protect their daughters from FGM but do not publicly declare it due to social pressure. These families often lack the means to keep their daughters in school and prevent early marriage before the age of 18.
Sponsoring a girl means ensuring her education and also protecting her from FGM and forced marriage.
Say no to female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriages
GAMS Belgium has always been opposed to gender-based violence such as FGM and forced marriages. While we primarily work in Belgium, we also initiate projects close to our hearts in Vélingara. Since 2016, we have been running a sponsorship program for young girls there: the ‘Pact for Education’.
The Pact for Education
In Vélingara, where our president and founder Khadidiatou Diallo grew up, we aim to support families who reject FGM so that girls can attend school until they finish high school and be protected from FGM and forced marriages.
In other words, making a monthly donation enables a young girl to attend school until the age of 18 and protects her from forced marriage and FGM.
Already 18 girls sponsored in 3 villages
Parents receive a monthly stipend of €15 on the condition that they commit to not subjecting their daughter to FGM, enrolling her in school until she completes high school, and refraining from arranging her marriage forcefully.
On-site, the GAMS Belgium team consists of two facilitators. Regular monitoring will be conducted regarding school and medical issues.
Want to support a girl?
The project’s primary goal is to protect 50 girls in the Vélingara department. While 18 girls have already been sponsored, others are on a waiting list. Support them too!
DONATION TERMS
For donations exceeding €40 per year, you are entitled to tax deductions. You will receive a tax certificate in May of the following year.

Monthly donation

- 15 € to cover the school fees of one child
- 20 € to cover the school fees of one child and support operational costs (transportation of facilitators)
- 25 € to cover the school fees of one child and support operational costs (transportation of facilitators) and contribute to their salary
- 30 € to cover the school fees of one child and support a theater awareness project with the local youth council of Vélingara
Regardless of your choice, the child and their family will receive €15 per month on the condition that the parents commit to not subjecting their daughter to female genital mutilation, to enroll her in school until she completes secondary education (high school), and to refrain from forcing her into marriage.
