for professionals

Training

GAMS Belgium invests significantly in training for professionals who are in contact with individuals affected by FGM, across various sectors: social work, healthcare, education, asylum, law enforcement, and early childhood. This is aimed at enhancing the identification and support of those affected individuals.

In 2022, GAMS Belgium trained 2084 professionals
(which is more than in 2021). This included 96 information sessions.

Our approach

GAMS Belgium offers training on FGM, forced marriages, and gender-based violence within the asylum framework.

The following topics are addressed: sociocultural aspects, impacts on physical and psychological health (traumatic memory), legal framework, intercultural communication, psychosomatic approach, and gender approach.

For whom?

  • Professionals from all sectors in contact with individuals affected by FGM

  • Secondary schools, universities, colleges

  • National networks of organizations working in the fields of migration, violence against women, gender equality

We also contribute to the basic curriculum of certain midwifery colleges. We have developed training modules ranging from half-day, one-day, to two-day sessions.

Additionally, we have developed more specific modules for certain groups (general practitioners, medical centers, midwives and gynecologists, ONE and Opgroeien teams, PSE and teams).

Practical information

Some training sessions are free if they are part of a project funded by a donor. They are fee-based if GAMS Belgium has not received subsidies for these training sessions (price varies depending on the number of trainers).

We try to accommodate professionals’ schedules as much as possible (during lunchtime or in the evening). We can also conduct on-site training.
