30 years of GAMS. 30 years of commitment.
GAMS Belgium celebrated its 30th anniversary with you!
30 years of history
Since its founding, GAMS has led numerous initiatives and taken on many challenges. In its early years, the association operated without public funding and was based in the apartment of the founder’s daughter. Step by step, however, GAMS succeeded in breaking down barriers and opening doors.
The organisation held its first international conference, published its first information brochures, and launched its first projects. In 2005, Khadidiatou Diallo was named “Woman of the Year” in recognition of her commitment and the impact of the association.
Over the years, GAMS expanded its presence by opening regional offices in Liège, Namur and Antwerp, strengthening its work across Belgium.
For 30 years, GAMS has continued to grow and expand its activities: supporting girls and women affected by female genital mutilation and their families, leading prevention campaigns, providing training for professionals, and advocating with public authorities. Through this work, the association has established itself as a leading organisation in the fight to end female genital mutilation.
Thank you for your participation!
On June 27, many of you joined us to celebrate the 30th anniversary of GAMS Belgium. The entire team would like to sincerely thank you for your presence, enthusiasm, and commitment throughout this special day.
This wonderful gathering truly reflected what GAMS stands for: a warm, dynamic, and committed organisation looking confidently toward the future. From the welcome breakfast onwards, the atmosphere was filled with meaningful conversations, warm encounters, and shared energy. Throughout the morning, we looked back on the journey of the organisation over the past 30 years, highlighting its achievements, the challenges it has overcome, and the vision that will continue to guide our work in the years ahead.
The speeches delivered by Khadidiatou Diallo, founder of GAMS Belgium; Diariou Sow, President of GAMS Belgium; Patricia Jaspis; Katinka In’t Zandt; Minister Yves Coppieters; Caroline Vrijens, Children’s Rights Commissioner; and the Youth Activists gave the day its depth and collective strength. Together, they reminded us how essential the fight against female genital mutilation remains, as well as the ongoing commitment to protecting the rights of girls and women and ensuring effective protection for all.
Lunch also provided a wonderful opportunity for connection and exchange. The food stands were a great success and encouraged participants to continue their conversations in a relaxed setting. During the afternoon, participants took part in a wide range of workshops, film screenings, discussions, and artistic activities, creating an atmosphere that was at once thoughtful, creative, and participatory. The discussions following the screening of Puissantes, the fishbowl conversations on protection for all, and the workshops led by GAMS psychologists sparked inspiring reflections and meaningful dialogue.
The day concluded with a festive atmosphere featuring entertainment, an open stage, music, and food stalls, allowing the spirit of celebration and togetherness to continue well into the evening.
Beyond the celebration itself, this anniversary was above all a valuable moment of remembrance, connection, and collective reflection. Your feedback, testimonies, ideas, and suggestions will continue to inspire our work. They encourage us to keep moving forward together, strengthening our actions and continuing to uphold the values that have guided GAMS Belgium for the past 30 years.
Thank you for being part of this special day. Thank you for your trust, your presence, and your support. We look forward to writing the next chapter of GAMS Belgium together with you.
