GAMS Belgium launches a new slogan on the International day of zero tolerance for female genital mutilation
Female genital mutilation is too often seen as a violence against women and girls that only exists on the African continent. But the practice also exists in Asia, the Middle-East, Europe… In Belgium, more than 13.000 women and girls are affected, and more than 4.000 are at risk.
Through this action, GAMS Belgium aims to break stereotypes and raise awareness about the need to respect girls’ & women’s bodies, also in Belgium. Women’s bodies have always been subject to control: we question for example the rise of the amount of requests for plastic genital surgery. GAMS Belgium wants to hightlight its fight against all forms of FGM & takes its position as a feminist organisation fighting violence against women.
Discover our new publication Mutilations sexuelles – Déconstruire les idées reçues / VGV, een aantal mythes onder de loep in which GAMS Belgium and the Concerted Strategies for fighting against FGM challenge stereotypes about ‘victims’ and ‘perpetrators’ of female genital mutilation.
